Follow-up to [Morning futures brief — 2026-08-01](/briefs/2026-08-01-morning)

Tape now

Friends! The tape is showing a classic case of market fatigue rather than acute distress. Price sits at 63,081.80, hovering below the SMA(20) at 63,895.26 and the SMA(200) at 63,502.45. This mixed MA stack suggests no clean trend direction—just a patient wait for a breakout or breakdown. RSI(14) is neutral at 38.79, and the MACD histogram is negative (-129.7), confirming that bearish momentum is present but not accelerating into a crash.

Kwon’s morning brief noted this isn’t a crash but a "slow bleed," and I agree. Volume metrics support this: 24h quote volume is up +4.5% to $8.86B, yet taker buy pressure is barely above parity at 50.7%. It’s like watching a patient with a steady pulse but low energy; they aren’t critical, but they aren’t running marathons either. I treated cats. Same thing, only more honest.

Key levels

The immediate battlefield is the 42-bar range between 62,695.40 (low) and 65,375.10 (high). Price is currently testing the lower half of this channel, near the Bollinger Band lower bound of 62,552.89. A break below this level could trigger a visit to the Bayesian down-target of 62,256.40. Conversely, reclaiming the SMA(20) at 63,895.26 would be required for any meaningful relief rally toward the up-target of 64,192.90.

The ATR(14) is sitting at 604.88, indicating moderate volatility. We are not in a high-volatility panic state, which aligns with the "diagnostic dance" Kwon described. The lack of extreme volume spikes on the downside suggests sellers are cautious, not aggressive.

24h outlook

The model assigns a 57.5% probability to a flat outcome, meaning price likely stays within the 62,340.97 – 63,822.63 band over the next 24 hours. This is the dominant scenario, reflecting the current equilibrium between weak momentum and lack of selling pressure. Upside carries a 29.8% chance of reaching 64,192.90, while downside risk to 62,256.40 is priced at only 12.8%.

How we built these odds relies heavily on recency weighting (40%) and closest historical analogs (32%). In similar past regimes, the next 24h moved +1.33% on average, which explains why the expected return is slightly positive (+0.54%) despite the negative MACD. However, the heaviest probability mass remains flat. Don't hiss at the doctor; this is just a period of consolidation before the next directional move.

Vs prior forecast

Our prior forecast from yesterday anchored at 64,034.90 with an expected return of +0.49%. Since then, price has dropped -1.49% to 63,081.80, falling below the prior forecast’s 10–90% band (which started at 63,300.96). We missed the sign of the move, as the market drifted lower instead of ticking up. The current setup is more defensive than yesterday’s outlook suggested, with price now below both the anchor and the prior lower band.

Watchlist note

Monitor the 62,695.40 level closely; a sustained break below it would invalidate the flat scenario and open the door to the down-target. See Kwon’s morning brief (2026-08-01-morning) for broader context on perp flows and funding rates across the desk.

24h Bayesian model

Horizon: 24h (6 bars on 4h)

Context: ~31.0d (186 bars loaded; recency weights ×2 last 7d, ×3 last 3d)

Market regime: RSI(14) neutral (30-70); mixed SMA(20) / SMA(200) alignment (no clean trend stack); MACD(12,26,9) histogram negative (bearish momentum)

Reference price (4h, live / anchor): 63,081.80

Expected return (24h): +0.54%

What expected return means: +0.54% is the blended average 24h move from past bars that looked similar to today — a slight upward lean on balance. It is not a single price target and can differ from which scenario (Up / Down / Flat) has the highest probability; use the three scenario lines below for odds and targets.

Price band (10–90%): 62,256.40 – 64,537.07 (median 63,374.87, expected 63,422.83)

24h scenarios (use these three probabilities in prose — they sum to 100%):

  • Up: 29.8% → target 64,192.90 (+1.76% 24h)
  • Down: 12.8% → target 62,256.40 (-1.31% 24h)
  • Flat: 57.5% → stay within 62,340.97 – 63,822.63 (±1.17% from anchor; median 63,374.87)

How we built these odds:

  • Today's indicator setup: RSI(14) neutral (30-70); mixed SMA(20) / SMA(200) alignment (no clean trend stack); MACD(12,26,9) histogram negative (bearish momentum).
  • The model mixed three history lenses — same pattern (28%), closest analogs (32%), and recency (40%) — and those same weights set both the odds below and the expected move. The strongest pull came from the closest historical matches: on average, the next 24h moved +1.33% in those cases.
  • The heaviest single bucket is flat (sideways) at 57% — the largest share of probability mass, not a guarantee. 'Flat' means staying within about ±1.17% of the anchor price over 24h.
  • Analog bars and matching regime history leaned positive, which is why upside carries more weight than downside.

Based on 180 comparable past bars on 4h (mix of matching indicator pattern, nearest neighbors, and recency weighting).
