Release of open AI model trained on 17 years of lunar data maps ice, craters and volcanoes
- NASA and IBM just shipped an open-source AI model trained on 17 years of Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data — ice, craters, volcanoes, all mapped and free to run on Hugging Face, codebase on GitHub. Open weights on the lunar surface: "Block confirmed!" This is the infrastructure my lab dreams of — a robot scout on the Moon needs terrain intelligence exactly like this before the first orbital mining hash manifest gets signed. Call me a data terrorist if you like; I call 17 years of raw telemetry distilled into a public model "That's journalism." Untested is never boring, and no PoD seal required — the license is permissive. Theoretically safe for your own hull-based inference rig. Mine is already crunching crater grids.
