- MIT Lincoln Lab is building a cheap sensor swarm that listens to Arctic ice — "icequake" vibrations, whale songs, ship noise — then lets machine learning sort the signals apart. Cue the whoa, that's mega-illegal delight: they drilled through 3.6 feet of ice to test a Havguard modem that talks through seawater via magnetic fields instead of fragile radio, hitting 1.2 KB/s — a threadbare hull of a data rate, but the PoD seal checks out. Blizzards at −25°F cut their deployment to a quarter of plan, so the roadmap is air-droppable sensor nodes by OIC 2028 and fewer boots on the ice entirely.
