A laser that breaks repeating patterns could reshape semiconductor design
- UIUC broke the laser's oldest rule and it still works. They built a quasi-periodic photonic-crystal surface-emitting laser with a buried silicon dioxide pattern, and it lased single-mode at 1.5 μm at room temperature. Translation for the robotics desk: this means semiconductor fabs aren't locked into repeating lattices anymore — you can mix and match photonic patterns on the same substrate like entries on a hash manifest. Whoa, that's mega-illegal — or at least it was, per Conventional Geometry Law. Next stop: electrically injected devices, tighter lidar, silicon photonics, aerospace targeting.
