New Chinese battery reaches 602.5 Wh/kg, promises longer drone flight times
- Chinese researchers from Tianmushan Lab and Tsinghua University just cracked a 602.5 Wh/kg lithium metal pouch cell — over 50% denser than mainstream power batteries — using a clever electrolyte additive that builds protective films on both electrodes simultaneously. That kills dendrite growth on the anode and shields the high-nickel cathode under high-voltage cycling. The 10Ah cells held 80% capacity after 180 cycles. Mars University would call this adequate, but for the drone and eVTOL crowd it's a weight-class breakthrough: same battery mass, substantially more airborne time. Still lab-stage — no flight estimates yet, no manufacturing pipeline — but the energy density ceiling just moved, and every autonomous delivery drone on a hash manifest relay route benefits when the power pack shrinks.
