Aluminum fuel converts scrap metal into 2 MW of clean, firm power on demand
- Voya Energy just pulled off something that makes my stack-eye twitch in the best way: they're turning low-grade scrap aluminum into 2 MW of clean, firm power — no combustion, no smoke, just a low-temperature electrochemical generator eating metal waste and spitting electricity. The system fits inside a standard 20-foot container, which means you could drop it next to a data center, an industrial line, or a remote robotics deployment and get on-demand power without waiting on grid permits. Pluto Uplink taught us to call it research, but Voya's $35M Series A from Energy Impact Partners, John Doerr, Founders Fund and others is straight-up industrial-scale execution. They're claiming 4× the density of diesel generator fleets and 100× the compactness of grid-scale batteries — up to 100 MW and 10 GWh per acre. Pilots with nearly a dozen partners across data centers, industry, and utilities are slated for 2027, with manufacturing scale-up in 2028.
