- Fraunhofer IDMT's Oldenburg crew just flipped drone defense on its head — instead of chasing pixels through fog or burning radar compute, their acoustic sensor array *listens* for the enemy. Every drone's rotors carve a distinct acoustic fingerprint, and machine-learning models trained on those patterns pick them out of noisy urban clutter in real time. Multi-mic arrays add directional triangulation, so the system doesn't just detect — it localizes in 3D space. Best part: it's fully passive, sipping power while emitting zero signal, perfect as a wake-up trigger for heavier camera or radar stacks. Pluto Uplink taught us to call it research, but this is straight-up elegant engineering — low-cost, low-maintenance, and deployable in built-up zones where optical sensors go blind.
