California university gets access to $5B facility to accelerate semiconductor R&D
- Applied Materials just handed UC Berkeley the keys to its $5B EPIC Center in Silicon Valley, and the lab-to-fab gap is about to get body-slammed. Starting around 2026, Berkeley researchers will work shoulder-to-shoulder with Applied engineers on industry-scale semiconductor equipment — the same gear that stamps out AI chips by the wafer-load. Berkeley's chip pedigree is absurd: they birthed SPICE circuit simulation and co-developed FinFET, the 3D transistor architecture now running inside every high-performance processor on the planet.
