ETHUSDT forecast — Markus Zucker

Follow-up to [Morning futures brief — 2026-10-18](/briefs/2026-10-18-morning)

Tape now

ETHUSDT is sitting at 2,410.39, which feels like trying to carry a crate of noodles through a crowded Under-Metro station while everyone else has bigger crates. We are below the SMA(20) at 2,421.21, the SMA(50) at 2,471.02, and way below the SMA(200) at 2,592.77. It’s a bearish MA stack — think of it as a hull that’s taking on water from three different leaks. The RSI(14) is at 42.74, so we’re in neutral territory, not screaming panic but definitely not cheering.

The volume metrics show some friction. 24h quote volume is $4,602,922,912, down -41.2% from yesterday, meaning fewer people are swapping hash manifests today. On the 4h chart, the last bar had a contract volume of 152,337.01 against an average of 556,791.16, so activity is thinning out. Kwon noted the funding rate is 0.0039%, which is positive but low, suggesting longs aren’t paying much to hold positions yet. I know that smell. Noodles or a crime? Probably just boredom.

Key levels

Resistance is right above us at the SMA(20) mid-band of 2,421.21 and the Bollinger upper band at 2,478.59. If we can’t break that 2,421 level with some actual volume (not just phantom contracts), we’re going to bounce off it like a bad relay hop. Support sits at the Bollinger lower band around 2,363.84 and the recent range low of 2,358.47. That’s the floor where the meat wallets usually stop buying because they realize their stack-eye is empty.

We are currently inside the 42-bar range of 2,358.47 – 2,563.10, leaning heavily toward the bottom half. The MACD histogram is slightly positive at +1.416, which is the only thing keeping this ship from listing completely to the left. It’s a small buoyant force, barely enough to keep the threadbare hull afloat. Does anyone have a normal cable? I’m tired of splicing these data terrorist signals together.

24h outlook

The model says there’s a 70.4% chance we stay Flat, meaning ETHUSDT will wiggle between 2,365.74 and 2,455.04. That’s ±1.85% from our anchor. It’s not exciting, but it’s honest. There’s a 19.3% chance we go Down to 2,305.38, and only a 10.3% chance we pop Up to 2,424.75. The expected return is -0.66%, which is a slight downward lean, like sliding down a greasy pole in Old Beijing.

How we built these odds: The model looked at bars with the same indicator pattern (RSI neutral, bearish MA stack, positive MACD hist) and found that historically, those setups tend to drop about -1.13% over the next 24 hours. Since the heaviest probability mass is flat, expect sideways churning rather than a crash or a moonshot. It’s a delivery. What could go wrong? Well, if the PoD seal breaks, everything falls out. See Kwon’s morning brief (2026-10-18-morning).

Vs prior forecast

Yesterday’s forecast anchored at 2,431.85 with a -0.73% expected move. Price has dropped -0.88% since then to 2,410.39, which matches the prior expected sign (downward). We are still inside the prior 10–90% band of [2,319.53, 2,483.86], so nothing has broken the previous logic. We didn't do it like that in Old Beijing; we used to just look at the sky, but this is more accurate.

Watchlist note

Keep an eye on whether the price can reclaim the SMA(20) at 2,421.21 with rising bar volume, because without that, the bear_stack remains intact and the downside risk to 2,305.38 grows.

Horizon: 24h (6 bars on 4h)

Context: ~31.0d (186 bars loaded; recency weights ×2 last 7d, ×3 last 3d)

Market regime: RSI(14) neutral (30-70); bearish MA stack (price below falling SMA(20) < SMA(200)); MACD(12,26,9) histogram positive (bullish momentum)

Reference price (4h, live / anchor): 2,410.39

Expected return (24h): -0.66%

What expected return means: -0.66% is the blended average 24h move from past bars that looked similar to today — a slight downward lean on balance. It is not a single price target and can differ from which scenario (Up / Down / Flat) has the highest probability; use the three scenario lines below for odds and targets.

Price band (10–90%): 2,305.38 – 2,456.10 (median 2,400.60, expected 2,394.52)

24h scenarios (use these three probabilities in prose — they sum to 100%):

  • Up: 10.3% → target 2,424.75 (+0.60% 24h)
  • Down: 19.3% → target 2,305.38 (-4.36% 24h)
  • Flat: 70.4% → stay within 2,365.74 – 2,455.04 (±1.85% from anchor; median 2,400.60)

How we built these odds:

  • Today's indicator setup: RSI(14) neutral (30-70); bearish MA stack (price below falling SMA(20) < SMA(200)); MACD(12,26,9) histogram positive (bullish momentum).
  • The model mixed three history lenses — same pattern (28%), closest analogs (32%), and recency (40%) — and those same weights set both the odds below and the expected move. The strongest pull came from bars with the same indicator pattern: on average, the next 24h moved -1.13% in those cases.
  • The heaviest single bucket is flat (sideways) at 70% — the largest share of probability mass, not a guarantee. 'Flat' means staying within about ±1.85% of the anchor price over 24h.
  • Recent and similar past setups leaned negative, which is why downside carries more weight than upside.

Based on 180 comparable past bars on 4h (mix of matching indicator pattern, nearest neighbors, and recency weighting).
