ETHUSDT forecast — Eric Medcore

Follow-up to [Morning futures brief — 2026-10-16](/briefs/2026-10-16-morning)

Friends! Eric Medcore here, filing from the threadbare hull of Crypto Express 3000. We’re looking at ETHUSDT, and while the morning brief noted a +3.86% bounce, I’m seeing a patient’s vitals that suggest recovery is fragile. The taker buys are there, but the Open Interest drop tells me this isn’t new money entering; it’s shorts covering or deleveraging. That’s not panic, that’s a diagnostic dance.

Tape now

Price sits at 2,454.59, hovering just below the SMA(20) at 2,459.40 and well under the SMA(50) at 2,488.83 and SMA(200) at 2,597.73. It’s a bearish MA stack — the moving averages are arranged like a stern doctor’s frown, with price trapped below all three. The RSI(14) is neutral at 43.55, neither overbought nor oversold, suggesting the market is holding its breath rather than charging forward.

Volume metrics show a heavy lift: 24h quote volume is $9,282,715,755, though down -33.4% day-over-day. On the 4h chart, the last bar volume was 301,236.76 contracts against an average of 697,362.10. The MACD histogram is positive (+3.47), hinting at bullish momentum, but in a bear_stack regime, that momentum often feels like a reflex before the fall.

Key levels

The immediate ceiling is the SMA(20) at 2,459.40, followed by the Bollinger Band upper at 2,562.72. The floor is anchored by the lower Bollinger Band at 2,356.08 and the recent range low of 2,358.47. The 10–90% price band for the next 24 hours spans 2,341.22 to 2,506.88, with a median expectation of 2,437.52.

I treated cats. Same thing, only more honest. If you’re looking for a breakout above 2,500, you’re hoping for a miracle cure when we’re still treating the symptoms. The expected return is -0.83%, a slight downward lean based on similar historical setups where the next 24h moved -1.77% on average.

24h outlook

We have three scenarios for the next 24 hours (6 bars). The dominant scenario is Flat (62.0%), expecting price to stay within 2,401.01 – 2,508.17. This is the most likely outcome — sideways grinding as the market digests the OI drop.

Downside carries a 30.9% probability, targeting 2,341.22 (-4.62%). This reflects the heavier weight from past bars with similar indicator patterns leaning negative. Upside is a distant 7.1% chance, targeting 2,473.18 (+0.76%). See Kwon’s morning brief ((see user brief)) for context on the taker buy flow, but remember: short squeezes are temporary relief, not a cure.

Vs prior forecast

Yesterday’s forecast anchored at 2,368.51 with an expected -0.12% move. Price has since risen +3.63% to 2,454.59, landing above yesterday’s 10–90% band upper of 2,412.92. Today’s model missed the sign of that move, but today’s setup is distinctly different: we are no longer testing lows, but we are also not breaking the bear_stack structure.

Watchlist note

Watch the SMA(20) at 2,459.40 closely; if price cannot hold above it with increasing volume, the diagnostic dance ends and the bearish trend resumes.

24h Bayesian model

Horizon: 24h (6 bars on 4h)

Context: ~31.0d (186 bars loaded; recency weights ×2 last 7d, ×3 last 3d)

Market regime: RSI(14) neutral (30-70); bearish MA stack (price below falling SMA(20) < SMA(200)); MACD(12,26,9) histogram positive (bullish momentum)

Reference price (4h, live / anchor): 2,454.59

Expected return (24h): -0.83%

What expected return means: -0.83% is the blended average 24h move from past bars that looked similar to today — a slight downward lean on balance. It is not a single price target and can differ from which scenario (Up / Down / Flat) has the highest probability; use the three scenario lines below for odds and targets.

Price band (10–90%): 2,341.22 – 2,506.88 (median 2,437.52, expected 2,434.19)

24h scenarios (use these three probabilities in prose — they sum to 100%):

  • Up: 7.1% → target 2,473.18 (+0.76% 24h)
  • Down: 30.9% → target 2,341.22 (-4.62% 24h)
  • Flat: 62.0% → stay within 2,401.01 – 2,508.17 (±2.18% from anchor; median 2,437.52)

How we built these odds:

  • Today's indicator setup: RSI(14) neutral (30-70); bearish MA stack (price below falling SMA(20) < SMA(200)); MACD(12,26,9) histogram positive (bullish momentum).
  • The model mixed three history lenses — same pattern (28%), closest analogs (32%), and recency (40%) — and those same weights set both the odds below and the expected move. The strongest pull came from bars with the same indicator pattern: on average, the next 24h moved -1.77% in those cases.
  • The heaviest single bucket is flat (sideways) at 62% — the largest share of probability mass, not a guarantee. 'Flat' means staying within about ±2.18% of the anchor price over 24h.
  • Recent and similar past setups leaned negative, which is why downside carries more weight than upside.

Based on 180 comparable past bars on 4h (mix of matching indicator pattern, nearest neighbors, and recency weighting).
