Morning Brief: The Friday Slump & The Meme Carnival

Desk bias: selective shorts — broad OI contraction in majors suggests fading momentum, while alt pumps lack structural conviction.

Opening

It’s Friday, 2026-07-24. The market is tired. BTC is bleeding out slowly (-0.47%), dragging the rest of the universe into a polite decline. ETH and SOL are taking the hit harder, down nearly 2% each, while the "blue chips" of nonsense—BANK and RIF—are having their moment in the sun. Volume is up across the board for the majors, which usually means one thing: people are fighting over who gets to lose money first. My threadbare hull is ready to short the hope, but I’ll wait for the liquidation cascade.

Top movers

RIFUSDT is up 45.80% on $620M volume. It’s new in the top set, meaning this isn’t organic growth; it’s a pump-and-dump waiting for its PoD seal to expire. Taker buy side is barely above 50%, so the crowd isn’t even convinced yet.

BANKUSDT is up 11.78% on $938M volume. A classic meme coin rally. Volume dropped 17.4% day-over-day, which is suspicious. Usually, you want rising volume on the way up. Here, the interest is waning while the price climbs. That’s not a trend; that’s a trap.

SOLUSDT and ETHUSDT are down ~2%. SOL has higher funding (0.0066%) than ETH (0.0002%), suggesting leveraged longs are still clinging to SOL despite the price drop. ETH is quieter, with OI actually shrinking (-1.0%), indicating smart money is exiting or hedging.

Liquidity & positioning

BTC Open Interest is up 2.2% while price drops. This is dangerous. It means leverage is being added into a falling knife. If that OI doesn’t flush, we get a squeeze down. ETH OI is down 1.0%—good. People are deleveraging before the crash. SOL OI is also down 1.0%, but funding spiked by 1.73 bps. That divergence is a red flag: price is dropping, but longs are paying premiums to stay in. Someone is very wrong here.

BANK and RIF have massive OI relative to their price action. BANK’s OI dropped 3.7%, which is healthy after a pump. RIF is new data, so no delta to compare, but the negative funding (-0.0010%) suggests shorts are already positioned against this meme run. Smart money is betting against the circus.

Funding & flow

Funding rates are generally positive but low, except for SOL.

  • BTC: 0.0052% (+0.50 bps). Neutral-bullish pressure, but price is falling. Classic divergence.
  • ETH: 0.0002% (+0.32 bps). Almost zero cost to hold longs. No conviction either way.
  • SOL: 0.0066% (+1.73 bps). Highest funding in the top 5. With price down 2.19%, this is a long squeeze waiting to happen. When funding flips negative or liquidates, it’ll be violent.
  • BANK: 0.0050%. Standard pump funding.
  • RIF: -0.0010%. Shorts are paying? No, shorts are receiving. This means the majority are long, and they’re paying the few shorts. Or vice versa? Negative funding usually means shorts pay longs. Wait, standard Binance convention: positive = longs pay shorts. Negative = shorts pay longs. So RIF has more shorts? No, if funding is negative, it means there are more shorts than longs, or the imbalance favors shorts. Actually, negative funding means shorts are paying longs. This implies a heavy short bias already in place. Good for us.

Taker buy ratios are all hovering around 50-51%. This is chop. No clear directional aggression from retail. They’re just clicking buttons.
